High-value products from food waste: An environmental and socio-economic assessment

چکیده
The use of food waste as feedstock in the manufacture high-value products is considered a promising avenue for achieving (bio)circular economy goals. residual biomass helps decrease fossil fuel dependency whilst simultaneously reducing demand additional resource. Despite interest exploiting product manufacturing, few studies assess sustainability such applications. In this study life cycle assessment, conventional and societal costing were performed to evaluate impacts five standalone case based on wet animal feed, protein-concentrated lactic, polylactic succinic acid production from waste. results showed that feed decreased global warming socio-economic potential relative products. Biochemical manufacturing incurred higher both environmental perspectives. These technologies are characterised by low technology readiness level should be taken into account when interpreting using results. Precisely reason, extensive uncertainty sensitivity analyses each biochemical establish hotspots, which identified steam ancillary materials consumption, feedstock-to-product yield. This suggests where centre future optimisation research efforts achieve sustainable competitive technologies. Through exercise, aims shed light relevance applying assessment design early (bio)technology development phases.
